TOBY KEITH’S FAMILY GATHERS TO CELEBRATE THE TOBY KEITH EXPRESSWAY — A LASTING LEGACY FOR AN OKLAHOMA LEGEND
More than two years after the passing of Toby Keith, his family gathered for a moment that was both emotional and deeply meaningful.
On March 3, 2026, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority unanimously approved the naming of a new east-west connector toll road in Norman, Oklahoma, as the Toby Keith Expressway, ensuring that one of the state’s most beloved sons will forever be remembered by future generations.
The ceremony was attended by Toby’s widow, Tricia Covel, along with his children, Krystal Keith, Shelley Covel Rowland, and Stelen Covel.
As family members posed beside a mock-up of the future highway sign, those gathered raised red Solo cups in tribute to the country legend’s iconic hit “Red Solo Cup.” It was a simple gesture, but one that perfectly captured Toby’s spirit—proudly Oklahoma, deeply patriotic, and always connected to the people who loved his music.
For Stelen Covel, the honor represented something much larger than a roadway.
“This is the state giving back to him in whatever way it could,” he said, adding that he believed his father would have been honored by the recognition.
Born in Clinton, raised in Moore, and later living in Norman, Toby Keith never forgot his Oklahoma roots. Throughout a career that sold more than 40 million albums and generated billions of streams worldwide, he remained one of the state’s proudest ambassadors.
State Senator Lisa Standridge described him as “a true Oklahoma legend.”
“He never forgot where he came from. From Clinton to Moore to stages across the world, Toby represented this state everywhere he went.”
Those words reflected what made Toby so special to so many people. No matter how successful he became, he always remained connected to his home state, his community, and the values that shaped him.
Beyond music, Toby was equally known for his dedication to military service members and veterans. Through hundreds of USO performances around the world and the work of the Toby Keith Foundation, he touched countless lives. His OK Kids Korral facility in Oklahoma City continues to provide free housing for children battling cancer and their families during treatment.
One of the more surprising aspects of the ceremony involved the family’s evolving view of the turnpike project itself.
Initially, the Covel family opposed the proposed road because of concerns about local residents and businesses that would be affected by construction. However, after years of discussion and legal challenges, they came to believe the project would ultimately bring significant economic growth to the Moore-Norman area.
Tricia Covel acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding the decision.
“It was kind of one of those things that’s been bittersweet for our friends and families that were displaced,” she said. “But at the end of the day, we knew the economic value that it was going to have and what it was going to bring to the Moore-Norman area.”
As she spoke, she wore a shirt featuring her late husband’s image beneath a black jacket—a quiet reminder that even amid celebration, the loss remains deeply personal.
The Toby Keith Expressway will become the first turnpike in Oklahoma’s nearly 80-year history to be named through a legislative resolution. Stretching approximately 28 miles, it will serve as part of the state’s ambitious ACCESS Oklahoma expansion project.
For Toby’s family, however, the highway is about much more than transportation.
It is about legacy.
“It’s part of our job as a family,” Stelen Covel explained. “We have to try to protect his legacy in the best way we can, and we think that this is something that’s going to last for generations.”
And perhaps that is the most fitting tribute of all.
Long after the final concert ended.
Long after the last encore faded away.
Long after the voice that sang “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” and “American Soldier” fell silent.
Travelers crossing Oklahoma will continue to see his name.
A reminder of a man who loved his state, loved his country, and left behind a legacy far greater than music alone.
For generations to come, the road ahead will carry the name of Toby Keith. ❤️🇺🇸🎶
