LARRY STRICKLAND BREAKS HIS SILENCE — The Painful Truth Behind Naomi Judd’s Final Years

For more than three decades, Naomi Judd and her husband, Larry Strickland, appeared to many fans as one of country music’s enduring couples.

But according to Larry’s later reflections, their marriage was far more complicated than the public ever knew.

The two first met in Nashville in 1979. At the time, Naomi was a nurse and single mother raising her daughters, Wynonna Judd and Ashley Judd. Larry was a respected gospel singer who had toured with Elvis Presley as part of The Stamps Quartet. Their shared love of music quickly brought them together, and after years of dating, they married in 1989.

As Naomi’s fame grew through The Judds, so did the pressures surrounding her life. Behind the awards and chart-topping success, she struggled with health challenges, emotional pain, and eventually severe mental illness. Larry later described years of watching someone he loved battle depression, anxiety, trauma, and emotional suffering that many people never saw.

One of the most shocking revelations Larry later confirmed involved a long-rumored incident during a particularly difficult period in their marriage. According to Larry, Naomi once fired a gun during an emotionally charged confrontation after discovering evidence of his infidelity. Decades later, he publicly acknowledged that the incident had indeed occurred, while emphasizing that he viewed it as an expression of overwhelming emotional pain rather than simple anger.

Despite serious marital difficulties, Larry chose to remain by Naomi’s side. He later explained that he understood how deeply she feared abandonment and how profoundly her emotional struggles affected her actions.

In the years before Naomi’s death, her mental health challenges became increasingly severe. Larry described feeling helpless at times as he watched her withdraw, struggle with daily life, and endure treatments aimed at addressing her depression and other conditions. Looking back, he expressed regret that he did not fully understand the depth of her suffering.

Following Naomi’s death in April 2022, Larry gradually began speaking publicly about their experiences. Rather than focusing on scandal or blame, he chose to emphasize the importance of mental health awareness and compassion for those living with serious mental illness. He explained that loving someone with mental illness means walking that difficult path alongside them every day.

Today, Larry Strickland’s message is less about controversy and more about understanding.

Behind the fame, awards, and public image was a woman fighting battles that few could fully see.

And behind many of those battles stood a husband who spent years trying to help her carry them.
